Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week – 2.20.23

Greensboro, NC – Louisville senior guard El Ellis and NC State graduate guard Jarkel Joiner shared Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, while Duke center Kyle Filipowski claimed the ACC Rookie of the Week award for the eighth time this season.

ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.

A native of Durham, North Carolina, Ellis averaged 24.5 points and 4.5 rebounds over 39.1 minutes per game against No. 7 Virginia and Clemson last week. He started the week with a 21-point effort against Virginia and then scored a game-high 28 points as Louisville upset Clemson. He shot 55% from the field, 50% from 3-point range and 85% from the free-throw line during the week.

Joiner averaged 22.0 points, 6.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals in games against Syracuse and North Carolina. The Oxford, Mississippi, native posted the fifth triple-double in NC State program history with 15 points, career-high 11 assists and 10 rebounds at Syracuse. The triple-double was the 38th in ACC history and just the 14th in a league game. He followed it up by tying a season high with a 29-point performance against UNC, with 20 coming in the second half. He made his final seven field goal attempts of the game. UNC led 54-48 with 10 minutes to play, but NC State ended the game on 29-15 run, with Joiner scoring 18 Wolfpack points during that decisive stretch.

Filipowski averaged 18.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in wins over Notre Dame and Syracuse to earn his eighth Rookie of the Week honor, which matches Duke’s Jahlil Okafor for fifth most in ACC history. A native of Westtown, New York, Filipowski recorded his third 20-point game against Notre Dame and his 12th double-double at Syracuse. He was the lone Blue Devil in double figures against the Irish, hitting 9-of-16 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line to go with six rebounds and three assists. Filipowski then racked up 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals at Syracuse and was part of a defensive effort that limited the Orange to 55 points – its ACC-season scoring low.
