From Durham to Chatham County: The arrest of Brent Coleman Matthews

Moncure, NC – On April 18, 2024, at approximately 9 a.m., law enforcement officers from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for assistance from the Wake County Sheriff’s Office regarding a stolen motor vehicle entering Chatham County.

Deputies soon located the stolen Ford F-150 where it had been abandoned near the intersection of Railroad Dr. and Old U.S. 1 in Moncure. 

During a search for suspects in the area, authorities located Brent Coleman Matthews, 48, of 1701 Angier Ave., Durham, just inside the wood line along Old U.S. 1. 

Matthews was taken into custody and charged with one count of felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two counts of felony possession of stolen firearm, and one count of felony possession of firearm by a felon.

Matthews was held without bond at the Chatham County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on May 13, 2024.
