Suspicious vehicle leads to tragic discovery at Goldston park

Goldston, NC – On May 2, 2024, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at Goldston Recreational Park, 355 Goldston Glendon Rd., Goldston. 

Deputies responded to the scene and discovered a deceased individual inside the vehicle, identified as Steve Aaron Ammons, 42, of 136 Bennett Branch Rd., Green Mountain. 

The cause of Mr. Ammons’ death was not immediately apparent. Sheriff’s Office investigators contacted Mr. Ammons’ family, and the Medical Examiner’s Office has been engaged to determine the cause of death.

A native of Lee County, he was a son of Steve Ammons and Christy Sloan Benton.

Surviving in addition to his parents, Steve and Christy, are his sons: Caleb Aaron Ammons and Noah Troy Ammons; daughter, Anastasia Ammons; step-father, Page Benton III of Chadbourn, NC; sister, Sarah Yager of Garner, NC; brother, Chad Bishop of Sandford and fiancée, Jennifer Floyd of Marion, NC.
