Chatham County seeks applicants for planning board vacancies

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Board of Commissioners seeks applicants for multiple vacant seats on the Planning Board. Interested residents should apply by 5 p.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023.

The Planning Board advises the Chatham County Board of Commissioners on planning, zoning, and subdivision issues. The vacant seats are assigned to County Commissioner District 1, District 3, District 4, and District 5. The vacant seats for District 3, District 4, and District 5 have terms expiring December 31, 2026. The vacant seat for District 1 is for an unexpired term ending December 31, 2024. Applicants from other parts of the county may apply also. Appointments shall be made in such a manner that Planning Board members shall represent insofar as practical, the geographical, socioeconomic, gender, and racial makeup of the county.

The duties include: monitoring trends related to land use, proposing needed amendments to the Comprehensive Plan; establishing development principles and guidelines; proposing ordinances for orderly development in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan; determining whether proposed developments conform to the Comprehensive Plan and development principles; keeping the Board of Commissioners and the public informed on planning issues and reasons for board recommendations; and conducting meetings to get public input.

The Planning Board typically meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., usually in Pittsboro.
