Bynum Front Porch is a Chatham County treasure

By Jay Niver

Bynum, NC – Friday evening’s scattered showers forced the weekly Bynum Front Porch concert indoors, but that’s a potential plus, not a minus. It’s great to sit outside and enjoy Bynum Front Porch’s free bluegrass, folk, and other music, but the Porch crew seamlessly moves inside if weather threatens.

Their historic, bucolic setting is almost perfect inside or out. Musicians and critical listeners appreciate the intimacy of a small, indoor venue. You can sit within an arm’s length of the musicians, and the 40-plus visitors who attended Friday were treated to a tasteful “coming-out” performance by our local Carolina Troubadours. There was ample, comfortable seating, and modest volume in the acoustically friendly general store (more than can be said about The Plant’s hard-surface, cavernous space). Plus great eats from Tacos Paraíso food truck.

Next time you pack a lawn chair to sit out at the Porch, don’t be discouraged if weather threatens. Come inside for what may be a superior musical experience.
