Pittsboro, NC – Chatham County Deputy County Manager and Finance Director Vicki McConnell will retire on February 19, 2021, after 45 years of service with Chatham County government.
McConnell started as a part-time employee in the Chatham County Finance Department in 1976 and held various roles until being named Finance Director in 1982. She was named Deputy County Manager in 2015.
During her tenure, McConnell played an instrumental role in the computerization of County finance records. Under McConnell’s leadership the Chatham County Finance Department received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for 30 consecutive years. This national honor is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. According to GFOA, its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. Also under the direction of McConnell, the Chatham County Finance Department created a sustainable method of funding future capital projects, which has enabled the County to secure and maintain a AAA bond rating from Standard and Poor’s.
When asked about her many accomplishments throughout her career spanning more than four decades, McConnell credits her colleagues and Chatham County leadership with being able to accomplish so much. “I wouldn’t have been able to do any of the work without support of the Commissioners and County Managers throughout the years,” said McConnell. “I’ve had a great time throughout my tenure with Chatham. There is always something different to do and new challenges to face. That’s what has kept me here for so long. I can honestly say I have really enjoyed my job.”
The Chatham County Board of Commissioners recognized McConnell with a special resolution at their February 15 meeting.
“It is extremely rare for someone to spend their entire career in one organization, and Vicki’s dedication to her staff and passion to serve the Chatham community is awe-inspiring,” said Chatham County Board of Commissioners Chair Mike Dasher. “Vicki’s expertise and leadership has put Chatham County in a position financially so that it is able to grow and prosper for many years to come.”
McConnell says she will miss her co-workers the most. “I am truly grateful to the people I have worked with over the years for giving me the opportunities that I have had and the unconditional support,” said McConnell. “I have had the greatest staff throughout my tenure. They are what make the finance office what it is. They are the best,” McConnell added.
McConnell says during retirement she looks forward to completing home projects, spending more time at the lake and playing her favorite sport – pickleball.
Assistant Finance Officer Hope Tally, who has been with Chatham County for 19 years, has been appointed as Interim Finance Director.
