Beginning in 1962, Congress authorized and requested that the President declare May 15 of each year to be Peace Officers Memorial Day to remember those law enforcement officers who had made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to their community and the week in which it falls to be recognized as Police Week in honor of our nation’s currently serving and retired law enforcement officers.

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, Chief Johnson and Officers from the Pittsboro Police Department attended a Police Memorial Ceremony hosted in concert with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and Siler City Police Department. Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson from Edgecombe County was the guest speaker, and Mountaire Farms provided the meal. Pittsboro Police Officers presented the memorial wreath, and Chief Johnson gave the closing remarks.

Chief Johnson, when asked about the event, said, “It was our pleasure to work with the Siler City Police Department and Chatham County Sheriff’s Office on such a humbling event.  Hearing the officers’ names called who lost their lives last year was sobering and proved how precious life really is.  We would also like to thank all of the community members who came out and supported us during the memorial.”

The Chief continued, saying, “The Pittsboro Police Department salutes the brave men and women who gave their lives for the communities they swore to protect and serve.  We also want to thank our Town and surrounding community for their support of us.  Without their support, our jobs would be tougher to deal with daily.  In times of difficulty and stress, our community makes all we do worth it in the end.”

Mayor Perry also extended words of praise to the officers of the Pittsboro Police Department, saying, “In this time of recognition for our Peace Officers, we in the Town of Pittsboro are extremely grateful for the professional service which our Peace Officers provide in our community.  Here in Pittsboro, we are fortunate to have true peace and protection by men and women who are devoted to the people of our town, led by our Chief and other officers who are lifelong residents and friends. Thank you all for your service to Pittsboro.”

When fully staffed, the Town of Pittsboro is served by 16 Police Officers in various units, including patrol, investigations, community policing, and administration.
