Chatham County Sheriff’s office investigates drowning death at Jordan Lake

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning that occurred late Saturday night at the Jordan Lake Wildlife Area. At approximately 11:43 p.m. on June 15, 2024, emergency responders were dispatched to 6771 NC 751 following reports of a possible drowning.

The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Pradip Kumar Bhujel of Charlotte.

Mr. Bhujel was at Jordan Lake with friends for a fishing outing. According to eyewitnesses, he waded into the water and subsequently disappeared from view. His friends raised the alarm, prompting a response from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and first responders including Chatham County Emergency Management, North Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, FirstHealth EMS, and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

On arrival, search efforts focused on the area where Mr. Bhujel was last seen. His body was located, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Medical Examiner, is investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Pradip Kumar Bhujel,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “Our team is thoroughly investigating the incident to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event.”

Last month, 16-year-old Bryan Guzman of Winston-Salem drowned during a birthday celebration at Jordan Lake.
