Charlotte, NC – The ACC kickoff in Charlotte has brought together fans, analysts, and coaches to discuss the upcoming football season. With North Carolina’s “Big Four” schools—Duke, Wake Forest, NC State, and UNC—each presenting unique challenges and opportunities, this season promises to be one of the most intriguing in recent memory. I had a chance to sit down and speak with veteran sports journalist David Glenn. He offers us an in-depth analysis of each team’s prospects, strengths, and potential pitfalls.
The Wolfpack’s High Hopes: NC State’s Year?
NC State enters the 2024 season with high expectations, often labeled as a “dark horse” contender in the ACC. Head Coach Dave Doeren, now in his 11th season, has built a program characterized by toughness and resilience. The Wolfpack’s defense, led by standout players like Davin Vann, is expected to be a formidable force.
“Dave Doeren has cultivated a tough, resilient team,” Glenn explains. “The Wolfpack have consistently demonstrated strength in the trenches, which is crucial for success in this sport.”
The addition of Grayson McCall, a transfer quarterback from Coastal Carolina and a three-time Sun Belt Player of the Year, has sparked optimism. McCall’s experience and leadership could be the key to unlocking NC State’s potential.
“Grayson McCall’s arrival could be the catalyst that elevates the Wolfpack,” Glenn notes. “His leadership and skill set are exactly what NC State needs to compete at the highest level.”
A crucial component of NC State’s potential success is their robust strength and conditioning program, led by the renowned “Thunder” Dan Burnette. Burnette, a former NC State player himself, has been instrumental in developing a culture of toughness and resilience.
“Strength and conditioning are paramount,” Glenn emphasizes. “In a league where close games are the norm, being the better-conditioned team can make all the difference.”
However, NC State fans are cautious, aware of the perennial “NC State stuff”—a phrase coined to describe the team’s history of falling short of expectations. Glenn acknowledges this skepticism but remains hopeful. With a solid defense, experienced skill players, and a promising quarterback, this could be the year that changes the narrative.
“Every year seems to bring a new sense of hope for NC State, but this time, the pieces genuinely seem to be in place,” he says. “If they can avoid major injuries and execute well, this could be a special season for the Wolfpack.”
Tar Heels in Transition: UNC’s Uncertain Path
UNC’s football program is at a crossroads. Under the guidance of veteran coach Mack Brown, the Tar Heels have had mixed results. Despite having two of the best quarterbacks in school history—Sam Howell and Drake Maye—the team has struggled to surpass the eight-win mark.
“UNC’s schedule this year is quite favorable, aside from a tough matchup against Florida State,” notes Glenn. “If they can solve their quarterback situation, there’s potential for a very successful season.”
Following the departure of standout Drake Maye to the NFL, the Tar Heels have three potential starters, but none have been definitively named. The competition for the starting quarterback position is fierce. This uncertainty could either be a blessing in disguise, fostering healthy competition, or a significant setback if the issue isn’t resolved quickly.
“The quarterback situation is the biggest question mark,” Glenn says. “For UNC to succeed, they need one of these three to step up and claim the job.”
Despite the quarterback uncertainty, UNC boasts a wealth of offensive talent, including running back Omarion Hampton and tight ends Bryson Nesbit and John Copenhaver. These players will be critical in supporting whoever wins the quarterback battle.
“There’s no shortage of talent,” Glenn points out. “The supporting cast is strong, which could help ease the transition for a new quarterback.”
Defensively, the Tar Heels have standout players like defensive end Kaimon Rucker and safety Alijah Huzzie, but the overall consistency and depth remain concerns.
“Defense has been a weak spot in recent years,” Glenn notes. “For UNC to reach its potential, the defense must step up and perform at a higher level.”
The question of Brown’s tenure also looms large, with whispers of retirement growing louder each year. Mack Brown, now in his 70s, continues to face questions about his future. While Brown has been somewhat sensitive to retirement inquiries, his tenure remains a topic of discussion among fans and analysts.
“Brown’s future is a legitimate question,” Glenn says. “But for now, his focus is on maximizing this season’s potential.”
UNC’s schedule is relatively favorable, with only one daunting road trip to Florida State. This opens the door for a successful season if the Tar Heels can solve their quarterback issues and maintain consistency on defense.
“If they can get solid quarterback play and tighten up the defense, the Tar Heels could surprise a lot of people,” Glenn predicts. “The ceiling is high, but so is the potential for disappointment.”
Wake Forest’s Rebuilding Phase: A Challenge Ahead
Wake Forest faces a challenging season after a disappointing 4-8 finish last year. Despite this, Coach Dave Clawson, one of the most respected coaches in the ACC, is optimistic about the future. The Demon Deacons boast one of the oldest teams in the conference, with several fifth- and sixth-year players returning.
“Experience is invaluable, and Wake Forest has plenty of it,” Glenn points out. “These veteran players will be crucial in guiding the team through the season.”
Clawson’s coaching pedigree is well-established. He has a history of turning struggling programs into winners, having done so at Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green, and now Wake Forest.
“Dave Clawson is a master at maximizing his team’s potential,” Glenn says. “He understands how to get the best out of his players, which is why I wouldn’t count Wake Forest out, despite their average roster.”
However, Wake Forest’s struggles in the transfer portal, combined with higher academic standards, have made it difficult to replace lost talent. Key players departed for the Big Ten, leaving significant gaps in the roster.
“They’re not winning the portal game, and that’s a significant challenge,” Glenn admits. “But if they can leverage their experienced roster and Clawson’s coaching, a bowl game is within reach.”
Given these hurdles, even a modest improvement—such as reaching a bowl game—would be seen as a success. The Demon Deacons’ season will likely hinge on their ability to develop younger players and integrate the few incoming transfers effectively.
“Getting to six or seven wins would be a success,” Glenn concludes. “It’s all about building a foundation for future seasons.”
Duke’s New Era: Rebuilding with Manny Diaz
Duke is embarking on a new era under head coach Manny Diaz, who takes over following Mike Elko’s departure to Texas A&M. The Blue Devils are in a rebuilding phase, with many of the team’s top players having entered the transfer portal.
“Duke is facing an uphill battle,” Glenn explains. “Losing players and transitioning to a new coaching staff is always tough.”
Diaz brings a strong defensive pedigree from his time as defensive coordinator at Penn State and head coach at Miami. One of his key moves was retaining strength and conditioning coach David Feeley, who had been instrumental in the program’s recent success.
“David Feeley’s influence remains strong,” Glenn explains. “Diaz prioritized retaining Feeley even before officially taking the job, which speaks volumes about the importance of strength and conditioning in his program.”
Rebuilding will be a slow process for Duke, as Diaz works to develop the existing talent and integrate new players. The immediate goal is to establish a solid foundation and improve from last year’s performance.
“It’s going to be a tough year,” Glenn acknowledges. “But if Diaz can instill his philosophy and get buy-in from the players, Duke can start to build towards a more competitive future.”
While expectations are modest, Diaz is focused on establishing a strong culture and setting the foundation for future success. The Blue Devils are not expected to compete at the top of the ACC this year, but the season will be an opportunity to build towards a more competitive future.
“Success won’t come overnight, but the groundwork laid this season will be crucial,” Glenn emphasizes. “Diaz has the pedigree and the plan to eventually turn Duke into a contender.”
A Season of Possibilities and Challenges
As the 2024 college football season approaches, North Carolina’s “Big Four” schools find themselves in varying stages of development and expectation. NC State appears poised to make a significant impact, possibly challenging the traditional powerhouses like Clemson and Florida State. UNC’s potential hinges on resolving its quarterback situation, while Wake Forest and Duke are in more uncertain phases, focusing on rebuilding and development.
David Glenn’s insights underscore the unpredictable nature of college football, where talent, coaching, and a bit of luck all play crucial roles. As he puts it, “The beauty of this sport is that every season offers new surprises. Teams rise and fall, and predictions often go out the window once the games begin.”
For fans and followers of these programs, the upcoming season promises excitement, drama, and the potential for unexpected successes. Whether it’s a dark horse run by NC State, a resurgence from UNC, or rebuilding efforts at Wake Forest and Duke, there’s plenty to watch for in the state of North Carolina.
