Pittsboro, NC – On August 14, 2024, the Sheriff’s Office conducted an operation targeting the illegal sale of tobacco products to minors, underscoring the agency’s commitment to protecting the health of young people as they prepare to return to Chatham County Schools on August 26.
During the operation, deputies visited 11 locations across the county to ensure compliance with laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to underage individuals. While 10 of the businesses adhered to the law, one location was found in violation.
Tony Zagada-Vazquez, a cashier at P’s Vape Escape located at 190 Sanford Rd, Pittsboro, was charged with three counts of selling or distributing tobacco products to a minor. Mr. Zagada-Vazquez, 25, of 511 W 4th St., Siler City, was arrested and later released on a written promise to appear in court on September 11, 2024.
Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson emphasized the importance of this operation, saying, “As students prepare to return to school, it is critical that we do everything in our power to create a safe and healthy environment for them. Ensuring that businesses comply with laws designed to protect our youth from harmful substances is a key part of that mission.”
The Sheriff’s Office commends the 10 businesses that refused to sell tobacco products to minors during this operation. “We thank these businesses for doing the right thing and for their ongoing partnership in protecting our children,” Sheriff Roberson said. “The majority of our local businesses are committed to upholding the law and supporting our efforts to keep young people safe.”
The Sheriff’s Office remains vigilant in its efforts to prevent underage access to tobacco and other harmful products. Parents and community members are encouraged to speak with their children about the dangers of tobacco use and to report any suspected illegal sales to the Sheriff’s Office.
With the new school year fast approaching, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is committed to working alongside local businesses, schools, and families to promote a safe and supportive environment for all students in Chatham County.
