Smith & Miller recognized as exemplary employees by Chatham County Sheriff’s office

Pittsboro, NC – Sheriff Mike Roberson has announced the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Exemplary Employees for September 2024, recognizing two outstanding staff members for their dedication, leadership, and exceptional service to the agency and the community.

Each month, Sheriff Roberson honors one sworn and one detention or non-sworn employee for their exceptional performance, team spirit, and problem-solving abilities. In recognition of their achievement, honorees receive a Gold Exemplary badge to wear throughout the month.

For September, Detention Officer SSgt. Kristal Smith and SSgt. Robert Miller were selected for their
exceptional contributions to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detention Officer SSgt. Kristal Smith

SSgt. Kristal Smith has distinguished herself through her commitment to self-improvement and leadership
within Detention Center operations. Over the past few months, she has set personal goals to enhance her
supervisory skills, addressing both strengths and areas for growth. She has taken initiative on tasks like
reorganizing supplies and assisting with inventory without needing to be asked.

Her dedication extends beyond her regular duties, as demonstrated during the recent weather operation, where she was the first to volunteer for the mobile kitchen team. This selflessness highlights her willingness to step up and serve in any capacity. Kristal is known as an effective and thorough trainer of new employees, ensuring her shift maintains consistency and high standards. Her leadership was recently bolstered by attending Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) and First Line Supervision courses, and she is scheduled to attend Field Training certification.

Kristal’s care for her colleagues is also notable. Recently, she spent time off-duty at the hospital supporting an employee in need, showcasing her compassionate nature and commitment to the well-being of her team.

SSgt. Robert Miller

SSgt. Robert Miller has expanded his supervisory role to encompass domestic violence, fraud, and major crimes investigations within the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). Rob also oversees investigations into Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) and is responsible for the office’s use of advanced tools such as Clearview facial recognition software.

Rob’s close attention to detail is evident in his daily review of all incident reports and his management of crime rate and index data. His expertise in cell phone data plotting has also been instrumental in complex
investigations, and he has become a trusted leader in handling high-profile cases.

One of Rob’s standout qualities is his ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the Sheriff’s Office. Whether working with new investigators or command staff, Robert’s rapport and ability to explain complex issues make him an invaluable asset.

Sheriff Roberson praised both SSgt. Kristal Smith and SSgt. Robert Miller for their exemplary service. “Kristal’s leadership in detention and Robert’s expertise in CID are excellent examples of the dedication we strive for at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Roberson. “Their commitment to their work and their teams makes a lasting impact on our agency and the community.”
