Chatham County Schools announces district leadership changes

Pittsboro, NC – On November 7, 2024, the Chatham County Board of Education approved a Chief Technology Officer and a Public Information Officer for the district.

Dr. Mark Samberg was named Chief Technology Officer for Chatham County Schools. Holding an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from East Carolina University, Dr. Samberg currently serves as Chief Technology Officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, where he has led statewide modernization efforts.

His extensive background includes managing complex IT systems, enhancing cybersecurity infrastructure, and leading the development of digital learning strategies. Dr. Samberg’s innovative mindset and collaborative approach will position Chatham County Schools to strengthen its technology infrastructure and support evolving instructional and operational needs. Dr. Samberg replaces Mr. Jimmy Schwankl who will retire in December.

Ms. Jessica Pasión was named Public Information Officer for Chatham County Schools. Currently pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from High Point University, she also holds an MBA from Elon University. Most recently, she served as Director of Community & Education at CivStart, where she developed national partnerships and spearheaded innovative communication strategies. With
experience in social media management, crisis communications, and fostering community relations, Mrs. Pasión is poised to elevate our district’s public presence and engagement with stakeholders. Ms. Pasión replaces Mr. John Wood who left the district earlier this year.

I am eager to collaborate with the Board of Education, Superintendent, and the
dedicated staff, students, and families across Chatham County to celebrate and support the work happening every day in our schools.”
