Chatham County residents on alert for asphalt scammers

Pittsboro, NC – As warmer weather arrives, so do scammers looking to take advantage of unsuspecting residents. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is receiving reports of a common scam involving individuals who approach homeowners claiming to have leftover asphalt from another job. These scammers offer to complete driveway or sidewalk work at a discounted price, only to deliver subpar or incomplete work before disappearing with the payment.

This type of scam is not unique to Chatham County — it has been reported in multiple areas and tends to resurface each year. The scammers often pressure residents into making quick decisions, sometimes requesting payment upfront or using deceptive tactics to gain trust.

“We want our residents to be cautious when approached with unsolicited offers for home improvement work,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson. “If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to take precautions:

  • Be wary of anyone who shows up uninvited, offering discounted work with “leftover” materials.
  • Never pay in full upfront — legitimate contractors will usually provide a written estimate and contract.
  • Research and verify businesses before agreeing to any work. Ask for references and check for reviews or complaints.
  • If you feel pressured to make a quick decision, step back and take the time to consult with trusted family members or friends.

If you or someone you know has been approached by individuals offering these types of services or has fallen victim to this scam, please report it to your local law enforcement agency. Contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at (919) 542-2911.
