Siler City, NC – On Saturday, November 6, 2021 two sports from Chatham Charter School in Siler City will be competing in 1A state championships hosted by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA). The women’s tennis team, men’s cross country team, and a runner from the women’s cross country team will make appearances in the state championship for the first time in school history. Senior Brandon McKoy has qualified all four years of his high school career for the state cross country meet as an individual and earned All-State honors in 2020.
On Wednesday, November 3, in a 6-3 victory over Voyager Academy, the women’s tennis team claimed the title of East Regional Dual Team Champion. The eight members of the Knights team in the playoff singles and doubles are Rebecca Brookshire, Lorelei Byrd, Emery Eldridge, Ashlyn Hart, Lillian Jones, Elphie Spillman, Emily Stecher, and Dana Szpunar. The team is coached by Kelly Eldridge and Larisa Spillman. The state championship matches will begin at 9:30am on Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Park with the #5 seed Knights taking on the #1 seed Mount Airy. There will be no admission fee.
The Knights men’s cross country team finished third in the regional meet held in Cary on Saturday, October 30 and qualified to run in the state meet at Ivey M. Redmon Park in Kernersville. McKoy was the top finisher in the East Regional race while Caleb Kolb finished in fifth place, leading their team to qualify. The other team members are Silas Christenbury, Thomas O’Hara, Landon Rakes, Colton Todd, Julian Todero. In the women’s meet, Meredith Reese finished in the top 15 runners and qualified for the women’s state meet. The team is coached by LaShawn LaFranque and Tina Rakes. The men’s 1A meet is at 9:00am, and the women’s 1A meet is at 10:20am. Admission will be $10.
