NCHSAA STATEMENT ON REGIONAL SITE SELECTION PROCESS

In December & January, the Association closely monitored the surge in COVID-19 cases, and it was determined at that time that we would not be able to use the collegiate venues that we have used in the past for Regional Basketball Championships. As that decision was made, the NCHSAA reached out to the NC Basketball Coaches Association to get their feedback on sites for the Regional Finals.

Knowing Regional Finals have traditionally been held at neutral sites, the NCHSAA worked with the NCBCA to identify large high school sites in each region that would be willing to host these games. The NCHSAA talked with many member schools in each region and found the best available neutral venues to accommodate expected attendance and provide the Championship experience we desire for our student athletes.

The arrangement for this year provides the opportunity for more spectators to get attend games in the Western Regionals. This year’s sites also provide a more equitable distribution of spectator capacity for the Eastern & Western Regionals and will help the NCHSAA meet as much demand for spectator capacity as possible.

We are grateful to our eight schools that stepped up to host these games. We believe that they will do an outstanding job of hosting this weekend. We are also thankful for the NCBCA’s partnership as their feedback was invaluable throughout the process. We look forward to outstanding Regional Championships this weekend.
