Pittsboro, NC – In celebration of Constitution Day and in conjunction with the 917 Society, Moms for Liberty – Chatham County, NC is honored to present to every 8th grader in Chatham County a free, pocket-sized copy of the U.S. Constitution.
Constitution Day, September 17th, recognizes the date in 1787 when the delegates of the Constitutional Convention signed our nation’s founding document. To commemorate this important anniversary, members of the Chatham County chapter of Moms for Liberty has delivered 745 copies of the U.S. Constitution to the CCS district. These booklets, provided generously by the 917 Society, contain the full text of the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, a quote from George Washington, a sample oath of citizenship, and no additional commentary.
“We hope that these Constitutions will help teachers to convey the importance of our nation’s framework and help each young recipient to better understand the rights guaranteed to them.” (Amy Kappelman, Chapter Chair, Moms for Liberty – Chatham County, NC)
Supreme Court Justice, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. wrote in 1905 that “[The Constitution] is made for people of fundamentally differing views.” Moms for Liberty – Chatham County, NC, as a nonpartisan, non-profit group of local volunteers, agrees with that sentiment. The group hopes that by owning their own physical copy of the U.S. Constitution, each 8th grader in Chatham County will be able to refer to the text again and again as they move forward in their education.
Furthermore, these personal U.S. Constitutions will support the civics curriculum for 8th graders, which is mandated to include studying the U.S. Constitution by North Carolina Essential Standard 8.C.&G.1.2 and by federal regulations. Each educational institution that receives federal funds for a fiscal year is required to hold an educational program about the U.S. Constitution for its students on or near September 17 (U.S. Dept of Education).
