Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning incident that occurred at Jordan Lake Tuesday evening, July 2, 2024.
Eduardo Martinez, 52, of Carrboro, drowned while swimming in Jordan Lake in an area near the intersection of Martha’s Chapel Road and Farrington Road. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the incident at approximately 8:47 p.m. Martinez was visiting the lake with family, who observed him struggling in the water but were unable to help him.
Despite the immediate response from emergency services, Mr. Martinez’s body was recovered later that evening.
Sheriff Mike Roberson expressed his condolences to the Martinez family, saying, “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Eduardo Martinez during this very difficult time. Losing a loved one in such a sudden and tragic manner is devastating, and we are here to support the family in any way we can.”
The Victim Services Unit of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is actively working with the Martinez family to provide the necessary support and assistance.
In addition to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, first responders included North Chatham Fire Department, FirstHealth Emergency Medical Services, Chatham County Emergency Management, and the Medical Examiner.
With the upcoming holiday weekend expected to bring increased activity to Jordan Lake, Sheriff Roberson emphasized the importance of water safety and adherence to swimming regulations.
“As we approach the busy holiday weekend, we urge everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying the natural resources our county has to offer,” said Sheriff Roberson. “Swimming in designated areas of Jordan Lake and following safety guidelines can prevent such heartbreaking incidents. Please be mindful of the dangers and take the necessary precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for all.”
