Preparing for the upcoming election: Insights from Chatham County’s election officials

By Gene Galin

Pittsboro, NC – As the countdown to the election draws near, the Chatham County Board of Elections is making a concerted effort to educate voters about crucial changes and requirements for the upcoming election. During a breakfast event at 79 Degrees West last Tuesday, Director Pandora Paschal and Deputy Director Chance Mashburn discussed essential information, including voter ID requirements, absentee ballots, early voting sites, and other key dates that voters need to keep in mind. With the election just around the corner, understanding these details is vital for a seamless voting experience.

The Importance of Voter ID

New Requirements for Identification

In recent years, voter ID laws have evolved, and Chatham County is no exception. For this election cycle, a valid photo ID will be required for all voters. “You can use your North Carolina State-issued driver’s license,” Pandora Paschal explained. “If you don’t have one because you just moved here, we can issue you a North Carolina election ID at our office.”

Residents may also use other forms of identification, including a passport or an approved student ID. However, it’s important to note that UNC’s digital ID will not be accepted this year. For students needing assistance, Chatham County’s office is equipped to help obtain an appropriate ID.

Ensuring Accessibility

The Board of Elections is dedicated to making voting accessible for all, including those with disabilities. “We have accessible voting equipment that aids those who are visually impaired,” Chance Mashburn noted. “These machines provide larger fonts and audio support to read ballots.” Additionally, curbside voting is available for individuals who may have difficulty entering polling places.

Absentee Voting: A Convenient Option

How to Request an Absentee Ballot

Absentee voting has become a popular choice for many voters looking to cast their ballots without the need to physically attend a polling station. Residents have until October 29 to request an absentee ballot. “You can submit your request through the North Carolina State website or by mail, and we’re also available in our office to assist you,” Mashburn mentioned.

Once ballots are requested, voters can expect them to be sent out promptly, allowing them to participate in the election even if they are unable to vote in person on Election Day.

Key Dates to Remember

The absentee voting process is straightforward but requires awareness of critical deadlines. “We want to ensure that every voter who has requested an absentee ballot receives one,” Pandora emphasized. Voters are encouraged to act quickly to ensure they receive their ballots in time for the election.

Early Voting: A Critical Opportunity

Locations and Hours

Chatham County is offering an expanded early voting period this year, with six designated sites available for residents. “Early voting will take place from October 17 through November 2,” Pandora stated. The locations include:

Governor’s Village

CCCC Health Science Building

Chatham County Agricultural and Conference Center

Siler City Armory

Goldston Town Hall

The sites will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. This should provide ample opportunity for voters to cast their ballots at their convenience.

Registering to Vote

The deadline for voter registration is October 11. Individuals who have not yet registered can do so online or by visiting the elections office. “If you miss the registration deadline, you can still register during early voting, provided you’ve been a resident for at least 30 days,” Chance explained. This offers a critical safety net for those who may be unaware of the registration requirements.

The Voting Process on Election Day

Polling Locations

For those planning to vote on Election Day, it’s essential to know your assigned polling place. “You must vote at your designated location, as it ensures that you receive the correct ballot,” Chance said. The polls will open at 6:30 AM and close at 7:30 PM, providing ample time for voters to participate.

The Ballot: What to Expect

Voters should be prepared for a lengthy ballot this year, which is notably the longest Chatham County has seen at 17 inches. “It’s crucial for voters to be prepared for the time it may take to complete their ballots,” Pandora warned. Those who opt for early voting may also benefit from fewer election-related calls, as their participation will be recorded promptly.

Becoming a Poll Worker: A Community Opportunity

Engaging the Community

Chatham County’s Board of Elections is actively seeking new poll workers for the upcoming election. This paid position offers a unique opportunity for residents to engage with their community and participate in the democratic process. “We are always looking for enthusiastic individuals to help out on Election Day,” Chance encouraged. Interested parties can sign up at the elections office.

Engaging and Empowering Voters

As the election approaches, the Chatham County Board of Elections is working diligently to ensure that every voter has access to the information and resources they need. From understanding voter ID requirements to navigating absentee ballots and early voting opportunities, the emphasis is on empowering citizens to exercise their right to vote. As Pandora and Chance wraped up their discussion, they reminded everyone that being informed is key to a successful election experience.

“Don’t hesitate to reach out to our office if you have questions,” Chance added. “We’re here to help ensure that every vote counts.”

As Chatham County gears up for the election, the message is clear: staying informed and prepared will pave the way for a smooth and successful voting process. For further information, residents are encouraged to visit the Chatham County Board of Elections website or contact their office directly.
