Snatching campaign signs: A story of political shenanigans

By Mark Stinson

Siler City, NC – Firstly it was the Harnett County democratic chair Lowell Simon who was arrested in Carthage for stealing political signs. It was likely a misunderstood fact about the location but the statement was accurate otherwise. So it wasn’t fake, just not 100% accurate. Big difference.

Subject: Fake news!
It’s true that it’s illegal to steal campaign signs. It’s also true that a former Democratic Party chair was arrested for stealing Republican campaign signs. What is not true is that the offender was not from Mecklenburg County but Moore County. Bottom line: don’t mess with people’s signs. Now go VOTE. Don’t leave your future up to someone else.

as it appeared in the October 22 Chatham Chatlist

WRAL News reported that “According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy saw a man named Lowell Simon, 68, around 5:25 p.m. Thursday removing campaign signs from the roadside along Seven Lakes Drive in the West End community. The deputy, who was responding to an unrelated crime at the time, followed up at Simon’s home and found the signs in Simon’s vehicle.”

A good question to ask is why GOP signs disappear on US 421 and suddenly  big blue democratic signs appear magically at the same time. Last election Beth and I with our own eyes watched an older gentleman and woman, gray haired, in an older red Ford Ranger pickup with a camper top snatch GOP signs at the intersection of 902 and 421 and toss them in the back.  We turned in behind them and they took off like a bolt of lightning through traffic nearly causing a wreck. I reported this to a deputy parked at Chatham Central in the upper parking lot.  I saw that truck again in Siler City and several times in Pittsboro but never saw it again down this way. Signs continued to disappear and its already started again this election.

The real question is, do you think snatching  those signs will make any difference? Either way?

The biggest question is why some feel its OK to take someone’s freedom of speech away and snuff it out while its OK to shove theirs down everyone’s throats. I was a lifelong blue dog conservative democrat, its public record. The party went off the rails on the crazy train and left me and a lot of others.  I’m a registered independent voter now , independent thinker that could vote either way. There is no reality where I would snatch any political sign no matter how much I loathe the person it represents. I simply won’t stoop to that level of petty insecurity and hate towards anyone’s freedom of speech. We are in a free country and like it or not you can put up political signs for Satan and its our right guaranteed by the constitution.  No one has the right to take that away no matter what.

This election; it’s a shit show and you know whose fault it is? It’s ours for tolerating this kind of political circus. We hear politicians say I’m going to do this or that but you never hear them explain how. We need to press them to explain how in detail before they get our votes.  Bipartisanship is extinct like a dead dinosaur.

It’s got to a point where all we hear is terms like misinformation used by political pundits like small children pointing fingers going “liar, liar pants on fire!”

I am sick of politics. I want a government that works for all the people again not against the half that didn’t vote for those currently in power.

I am done now. I have had my rant.
