Art for all: The Plant welcomes sculptors to showcase talent in Pittsboro

Pittsboro, NC – The Plant, located in downtown Pittsboro, will be hosting a Fall Sculpture Show. The weekend celebration of art, community and culture will take place Sept. 19-20. Artists from near and far are invited to submit their works for this juried exhibition, which will culminate in the purchase and permanent installation of selected sculptures throughout downtown by local businesses and organizations.

As Pittsboro experiences rapid growth, public art plays a crucial role in fostering a strong sense of place, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of public spaces, and creating a shared cultural identity. Sculptures strategically placed throughout downtown will not only beautify the area but also serve as conversation starters, attract visitors and support local businesses. This initiative ensures that as the town evolves, art remains at its heart, reflecting the creativity and spirit of its community. Public art isn’t just decorative; it’s a powerful tool for fostering connection, improving quality of life and driving growth within communities.

“Public art is a wonderful way for us to bring our community together. We look forward to celebrating our community’s dedication to public art through this event,” said Pittsboro Mayor Kyle Shipp.

The Fall Sculpture Show features a vibrant weekend filled with art-focused events, including live music, interactive installations, artist meet-and-greets and family-friendly activities. Local restaurants, cafes and businesses across Pittsboro will join in the festivities, making it a true town-wide celebration of creativity.

“I’ve wanted to put this sculpture show together ever since attending Lenoir’s Sculpture Celebration in the North Carolina mountains,” said Tami Schwerin, co-founder of The Plant, which is a food and beverage campus that is home to small businesses ranging range from spirits to restaurants to a native plants nursery, farmers market, sake bar, axe throwing to hemp clothing and an art gallery.

Sculptors of all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Priority is given to North Carolina artists.

Selected works will be showcased throughout the event, and a panel of local art professionals and community leaders will choose pieces for purchase and permanent installation. Winning pieces will become a lasting part of Pittsboro’s public art landscape.

Submissions should be durable, suitable for outdoor display, and able to withstand the elements. Artists interested in participating can find full details and application instructions at www.theplantnc.com/call-for-art. The deadline for submissions is May 1.

The Sculpture Celebration will be Saturday from noon-6pm with musicians and also pop-up artists and craftspeople.  The town of Pittsboro will be hosting art events throughout the weekend as well.

The purchased artwork will be installed in the Town of Pittsboro easements that have been designated for public art.
