Don’t fall for it: Chatham County Sheriff’s Office warns of jury duty scam

Pittsboro, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a jury duty scam that has resurfaced in the area, with scammers using the Sheriff’s Office’s phone number (919-542-2811) and the names of actual deputies to make their calls seem legitimate.

Several residents reported receiving fraudulent phone calls, in which scammers falsely claimed the recipient failed to appear for jury duty or court. The callers threaten arrest or demand immediate payment to “resolve” the matter.

The Sheriff’s Office will never call individuals to demand payment or threaten arrest for missing jury duty or any court proceeding. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately.

Scammers often use high-pressure tactics, including impersonating real law enforcement officers, to make their threats seem credible. They may also “spoof” official phone numbers, making it appear as if the call is coming from a trusted source.

If You Receive a Suspicious Call:

  • Never provide personal or financial information.
  • End the call immediately.
  • Contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at our 24-Hour Non-Emergency Line at 919-542-2911, or your local law enforcement agency, to report the incident or verify any claims.
  • Warn family, friends, and neighbors to prevent others from falling victim.

Residents should remain alert and always question unsolicited calls that demand money or personal information. When in doubt, call the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office directly at the verified number above.
