Pittsboro, NC – On February 3, 2026, Chatham County lifted its State of Emergency due to Winter Storm 2.
Chatham County implemented the State of Emergency on January 30th, authorized under Article 1A of Chapter 166A and Article 36A of Chapter 14 of the North Carolina General Statutes.
Chatham County’s declaration of a State of Emergency enabled the County to take appropriate and necessary actions to protect the health and safety of residents, coordinate emergency response efforts, and facilitate access to emergency resources. These efforts included Chatham County pre-staging North Carolina National Guard resources within the county ahead of the storm. This proactive step was made possible through close coordination with North Carolina Emergency Management and helped ensure a rapid, effective response as conditions evolved.
Chatham County’s preparedness and response efforts were the result of strong collaboration across County departments and partners. The County extends its sincere appreciation to Chatham County Emergency Operations, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, Chatham County Fire Marshal’s Office, Chatham County Public Health, Chatham County Social Services, Chatham County Schools, Chatham County Aging Services, and Chatham County Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources. Together, these teams worked before, during, and after the event to help protect residents and ensure the community was informed, supported, and prepared throughout the storm.
“I want to sincerely thank our County staff, emergency responders, and community partners for their extraordinary work preparing for and responding to not one, but two winter storms in less than two weeks. Their dedication and coordination helped keep our community safe through challenging conditions,” said Amanda Robertson, Chatham County Board of Commissioners Chair. “I’m also grateful to the Chatham community for heeding warnings to stay off the roads, which allowed NC Department of Transportation crews, first responders, and utility workers to safely and effectively do their jobs.”
Although Chatham County’s declared State of Emergency has been lifted, Chatham County residents are advised to remain cautious while traveling, as icy road conditions may persist for several days. Governor Stein’s executive order declaring a State of Emergency for the entire state remains in effect.
