Siler City, NC – Public health officials are urging anyone who came into contact with a fox near Bojangles on Highway 64 in Siler City to seek medical care immediately. Those who did not have physical contact with the fox are not at risk.

On March 5 at approximately noon, Chatham Sheriff’s Animal Resource Officers responded to reports of a fox that came into contact with an individual near a dumpster behind Bojangles in Siler City. The fox has not been caught or tested for rabies. However, due to the significant danger of rabies, post-exposure treatment is necessary.
If you handled or came into contact with a fox in this area, seek post-exposure rabies treatment at the hospital emergency department immediately and contact the Chatham County Public Health Department at 919-548-4549 or 919-545-1759 (after-hours line).
“Without timely treatment, rabies is fatal,” said Chatham County Public Health Director Mike Zelek. “We are grateful to the staff at Bojangles and neighboring businesses who have assisted with the response and notified Animal Resources.”
If you see a fox in this area, please contact Animal Resources at 919-542-2911.
“As always, residents should avoid approaching wildlife and make sure their pets are properly vaccinated to keep themselves and their animals safe,” added Zelek.
