Chatham County seeks applicants for key advisory committees

Pittsboro, NC – Chatham County is seeking individuals to apply for several upcoming vacancies on its advisory committees. Service on committees is a great way for interested residents to have a voice on issues of interest and make a difference in the community. Individuals must be a resident of Chatham County to serve on advisory committees. The deadline to submit applications to serve is Friday, June 4, 2021, at 5 p.m.

Some of the vacancies are assigned to specific areas of the county identified by county commissioner election districts. Click here to view a map of commissioner districts. Residents also can look up their commissioner district for their address on the NC State Board of Elections website: vt.ncsbe.gov/RegLkup/.

Library Advisory Committee: This committee advises library staff on the operation of the county’s public libraries. Primary goals are representing and responding to current library needs and issues and promoting use of library services and programs by all residents. The committee meets quarterly and sometimes rotates to each of the three library locations. The dates and starting times vary.

The Library Advisory Committee has one upcoming vacancy assigned to County Commissioners District 5. The appointee would fill an unexpired term ending June 30, 2022. This person would be eligible for reappointment to a full three-year term.

Recreation Advisory Committee: This committee advises the County Board of Commissioners and staff on recreation programs and county-owned recreation and park facilities. It will play a key role in implementing the Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Master Plan adopted in 2019. The committee typically meets six times a year on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.

The committee has two upcoming vacancies for Commissioner District 3 ending June 30, 2024. There is also a vacancy for Commissioner District 1 for an unexpired term ending June 30, 2022. This person would be eligible for reappointment to a full three-year term.

Appearance Commission: The Chatham County Appearance Commission has a vacant seat and seeks applicants for the open slot. It especially needs members with expertise in plants, landscaping and landscape design.

The Appearance Commission establishes and oversees programs to enhance the appearance of the county. The commission also reviews and comments on non-residential site plans for Business, Industrial, Conditional Zoning Districts and Conditional Use Permits. It typically meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month in Pittsboro at 6:00 p.m.

The person appointed by the Board of Commissioners to fill the vacancy would serve a three-year term ending June 30, 2024. All appointees must live in Chatham County.
