After the big win head Lady Chargers basketball coach Cameron Vernon said: “This is a big win for us. During my time at Northwood we have really struggled against Southern Durham because they are always a very athletic and aggressive team. But this by far was our best performance during my tenure against them. A key was our guards ability to handle their pressure. I cannot say enough about our guards especially Skylar Adams for handling the pressure. We talked briefly before the game about what to expect and she is a great decision maker and ball handler.
McKenna once again showed her improvement. 20 points a career high and she was 3/6 from 3 point range and 2 that were misses were halfway down. Very nice to have Tekeyah on the floor as well as she showed her ability to be a force inside and was very efficient with 8/11 shooting. I have a very good problem because I have a lot of girls that can play and not enough minutes to hand out.
Natalie Bell, Rae McClarty and Myla Marve did a phenomenal job offensively and defensively against the Southern guards. A key moment was in the first quarter when we decided to go from man defense to a 2-3 zone because we were not moving our feet well enough and reaching. That forced Southern to shoot more from the outside and I feel their strength is getting to the basket.
On the offensive end we were very efficient. 24/44 (55% from 2fg) and 3/7 (43% 3FG) is very good. An area though that we all know we need to work on is the 13/26 from the foul line (50%). Our team goal is 70% daily in practice and games so we have a lot of room for improvement.
However, very happy on the girls performance tonight and they played extremely well.”
