Chatham County names Darrell Butts as Assistant County Manager

Pittsboro, NC – Chatham County is thrilled to announce that Budget Director Darrell Butts has been named Assistant County Manager.

Darrell Butts

Butts received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy Analysis and a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a 15-year veteran in North Carolina local government having served in the Budget office of Forsyth, Orange, and Chatham Counties. Since August of 2020, Butts has served as the Budget Director in Chatham County and is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of the County’s annual operating budget as well as the County’s 7-year Capital Improvements Plan (CIP). Butts is a Certified Local Government Budget Officer (CLGBO) through the North Carolina Local Government Budget Association (NCLGBA) and a 2022 CIVIC Fellow.

County Manager Bryan Thompson noted that Butts’ experience and the valuable relationships he has formed make him uniquely qualified for the position of Assistant County Manager.

“Since becoming Budget Director four years ago, Darrell has grown to be a tremendous asset to our management team, the Board of Commissioners, and all of our departments,” said Thompson. “Darrell has developed as a leader over his last seven years in Chatham which has prepared him well for this deserved next leadership role.”

“I am excited for the opportunity to continue serving the residents of Chatham County in a new and different capacity,” said Butts. “I am looking forward to being involved in a wider range of County operations, while still being deeply involved in the County’s budget process. I would also like to thank past and current County management Renee Paschal, Dan LaMontagne, Bryan Thompson, and Carolyn Miller for their leadership, guidance, and support.”

This announcement follows the appointment of Assistant County Manager Bryan Thompson as County Manager upon the retirement of Dan LaMontagne on December 27.
