Unclaimed sheep to hit the auction block in Chatham County

Pittsboro, NC – Several stray sheep picked up in Chatham County in the Chicken Bridge Road area are now headed to auction in accordance with North Carolina law.

Chatham County Animal Resource Center staff safely rounded up stray sheep found roaming in woods near Chicken Bridge Road

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Animal Resource Center (ARC) recently took custody of the sheep after they were found roaming without identifiable ownership in woods near Chicken Bridge Road. Despite efforts to locate their owner — including posting notices and checking for missing livestock reports — no one has come forward to claim the animals.

Under North Carolina General Statute § 68-20, livestock whose owners cannot be identified or located must be sold at public auction after a required holding period and proper public notice.

In keeping with the law, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a public auction of eight stray sheep for Friday, July 25, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the ARC facility, 725 Renaissance Dr, Pittsboro, NC. Bidders are encouraged to arrive early and must be prepared to safely and humanely transport any animals they purchase.
