New Hill, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a drowning incident that occurred this evening at Harris Lake.

At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, deputies responded to a report of a drowning near the Cross Point Boat Ramp at 233 Cross Point Road in New Hill. The man had been brought to shore by friends before emergency personnel arrived.
Deputies, along with emergency responders from FirstHealth EMS and the Moncure Fire Department,
responded to the scene. No active search is being conducted.
According to initial reports, a man who had been fishing with friends entered the water and appeared to struggle. His friends pulled him to shore, where CPR was attempted. Despite the efforts of bystanders and
FirstHealth paramedics — who attempted to resuscitate the victim — the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The victim’s identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of family. The circumstances surrounding the drowning remain under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
