Fisherman’s find: Car spotted on sonar recovered from Jordan Lake

Pittsboro, NC – A submerged vehicle was recovered from Jordan Lake Friday morning after a fisherman reported spotting what appeared to be a car on sonar earlier in the week.

The object was located under the U.S. 64 bridge in roughly 30 feet of water, a well-traveled area frequently used by boaters and anglers. Deputies with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the scene Tuesday but found no signs of a recent crash and received no reports of missing motorists in the area.

On Friday, the Sheriff’s Office returned with assistance from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team. Divers confirmed the object was a vehicle, and Barnes Towing helped extract the car — a Nissan Maxima from the early 2000s — which was unoccupied.

“This isn’t something we see every day, especially in such a popular fishing spot,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson.  “We’re grateful to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office for their dive support and to Barnes Towing for helping bring the car safely to shore.”

Investigators will now examine the vehicle for clues as to how long it’s been in the lake and whether it’s connected to any previous incidents or reports.
