Pittsboro Feed’s exciting expansion: More space, more products

By Gene Galin

Pittsboro, NC – Pittsboro Feed, a local pet and feed supply store, is set to undergo significant changes as it expands its retail space to better serve the community. After nearly two decades in its current location, the store will relocate just 700 feet down the road to the former Pittsboro Ford building, tripling its retail space from 3,000 to 10,000 square feet. This expansion comes as a response to increasing customer demand and the need for more inventory space, allowing the store to enhance its offerings for both pet and livestock owners.

A Legacy of Service and Community

History of Pittsboro Feed

Pittsboro Feed has been a staple in the community since its inception. Originally purchased in 2005 by Josh Miller’s parents, the store has undergone several transformations to meet the needs of its customers. From a modest 1,000 square feet of retail space to its current setup, the store has expanded significantly to accommodate a growing inventory and a wider range of products.

Josh Miller reflects on the store’s journey, noting, “We’ve been looking for three years for a warehouse building and we need it. We just need storage.” The move to a larger facility marks a new chapter in the store’s history, allowing it to continue serving the community effectively while also adapting to changing market demands.

Community Support and Customer Loyalty

The decision to expand is not taken lightly. Miller emphasizes that the support from the Pittsboro community has been overwhelming, fueling the store’s growth. “We appreciate the support from everyone,” he says, underscoring the importance of customer loyalty in driving the business forward. With a delivery radius of 63 miles, Pittsboro Feed has become a trusted resource for many local farmers and pet owners.

The New Location: What to Expect

Size and Layout

The new location will feature a total of 15,000 square feet, with 10,000 square feet dedicated to retail. This substantial increase in space will allow Pittsboro Feed to display a broader range of products, from pet supplies to livestock feed, in a more organized and accessible manner. Miller describes the new layout as being inspired by the “Costco mentality,” where products will be readily available on the floor for customers to browse.

Temperature-Controlled Storage

One of the key improvements in the new facility will be the inclusion of temperature-controlled storage. This feature is crucial for maintaining the quality and shelf life of various feeds, particularly in North Carolina’s humid climate. “We want to extend that shelf life by putting it into a temperature-controlled area,” Josh explains, highlighting the Millers’ commitment to providing high-quality products for its customers.

Expanding Product Offerings

Diverse Inventory

With the move, Pittsboro Feed plans to diversify its inventory further. The store will continue to offer a wide variety of products for pets and livestock, including specialty feeds, supplements, and health products. Josh assures customers that the store will maintain its reputation for having everything in stock, ensuring that pet and farm owners can find what they need when they need it.

Focus on Local Products

In addition to expanding its inventory, Pittsboro Feed is committed to supporting local manufacturers. Many of the feed brands sold in the store, such as Purina and Nutrena, are produced in North Carolina, allowing the store to promote local agriculture while providing customers with quality products. “We try to support as much local as possible,” Josh states, emphasizing the importance of community connections in the business.

Enhancing Customer Experience

Improved Customer Service

Josh emphasizes that customer service will remain a top priority during and after the transition to the new location. The store will continue to offer personalized service, including assistance with loading heavy bags of feed into customers’ vehicles. “Our customer service is not going to change one bit,” he assures, promising that the friendly, knowledgeable staff will be available to help customers with their needs.

Educational Opportunities

Pittsboro Feed also aims to educate customers about their products. With staff members who are well-versed in animal care and nutrition, customers can receive tailored advice that suits their specific needs. Josh mentions that they have an outside farm consultant who can visit farms to provide personalized recommendations, further enhancing the customer experience.

New Features and Attractions

Chick Sales and Seasonal Offerings

One of the store’s popular offerings is its chick sales, which have seen a surge in interest due to rising egg prices. Miller notes that the store has a commitment to quality control when it comes to selling chicks, ensuring that customers receive healthy birds. The new location will allow for an expanded area dedicated to chick sales and related supplies.

Pet Supply Store Expansion

The pet supply side of the business has also been thriving, with services such as nail clipping and a dog wash facility attracting customers. The expansion will allow for a more extensive selection of pet products and services, catering to the needs of pet owners in the area. Josh expresses excitement about the potential for growth in this area, stating, “We want the store to look really good.”

With plans to diversify inventory, enhance customer experiences, and maintain a focus on local products, Pittsboro Feed is working to set themselves on a pathway to success

For residents of Pittsboro and surrounding areas, this expansion represents not just a new store location but a commitment to supporting the local economy and providing essential resources for pet and livestock owners. As Josh Miller aptly puts it, “We know what needs to happen, and we’re really excited to do it.”
