Avoid asphalt resurfacing scam in Chatham County

Silk Hope, NC – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports in recent days about an asphalt resurfacing scam targeting residents on the west side of the county.

Between August 19 and August 20, three calls were reported in the Silk Hope area, along NC 902 toward Bennett, and on Sunset Hill Road. In each instance, a man approached homeowners and offered to asphalt their driveways, claiming he had leftover asphalt from a paving project on U.S. 64 and could do the work at a reduced price.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s to 40s, balding, and has been seen driving a full-size black or dark blue Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck with a flashing light mounted on the front. In one incident on NC 902, a second man was also present. Both were described as white males traveling in the same vehicle.

No residents have yet reported losing money or property to the scam. Deputies have obtained photos of the suspect and vehicle from one of the calls and are continuing to investigate.

“Scammers frequently pressure people into making quick decisions,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson, “so it’s always best to slow down and check before agreeing to work that seems suspicious.”

The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to be cautious of unsolicited offers for paving or other repair work, verify credentials before agreeing to any service, and contact your local law enforcement if approached in a suspicious manner.

Anyone with information about these incidents, or who may have been approached by the suspect(s), is asked to contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at (919) 542-2911.
