Controversy at the Council of Aging: A sign of changing times in Pittsboro?

By Dorasue Christian

Pittsboro, NC – As a child growing up in Pittsboro in the forties and fifties is a time I like to reflect on. All the stores were closed on Sunday. This was a time for church and visiting with family and neighbors. While the adults made homemade ice cream, we played hop scotch, red rover and croquet.

On Wednesday all the stores closed at 1 pm. Wednesday night was for prayer meeting and choir practice.

When I went to Council of Aging yesterday, I was told  that I could not place a flyer about an upcoming free live music event at the Ag Center. It is to be held at 6:30 pm on Friday, September 5. Three bands: Safe Haven, New Direction Bluegrass and Raynard & Company are the bands that will be performing.

When I ask why I could not place a flyer, I was told it was because it was religious. Needless to say, I was shocked. In my opinion, when a flyer for a “Thank you Jesus” concert can not be placed at our local Council of Aging Center, Pittsboro is losing her way.

I sure miss the innocent time of my youth.
