The evolution of Pittsboro Feed: A sneak peek at the new storefront

By Gene Galin

Exciting changes are on the horizon for Pittsboro Feed, as the local feed and supply store is preparing to unveil its new storefront in what was once the old Pittsboro Ford car dealership. With enhanced offerings, expanded space, and a commitment to customer service, the upcoming location promises to transform the shopping experience for loyal patrons and newcomers alike. Josh Miller walked me through the new storefront as it’s being worked on for a sneak peek.

A New Home for Pittsboro Feed

After months of planning and renovations, Pittsboro Feed will be moving to a larger, more accessible space that will allow for an improved shopping experience. The decision to relocate was driven by the need for more space and better parking options, which the new site offers in abundance.

The move to the new location, which is situated across the road from the current store, has been a topic of anticipation among both the Millers and their customers. “We’re putting a big sign right above the door,” said Josh Miller, during our walk-through of the new space. “It’ll say ‘Pittsboro Feed’ in big white letters, and we’re just waiting for the town’s approval.”

The new storefront will not only feature a prominent sign but will also provide ample parking, a significant improvement over the existing site. “The parking lot is well-lit and much safer, which is one of the big positives we’re really excited about,” Josh noted.

Opening sometime in September.

Expanding Retail Space

Inside the new storefront, customers will find a spacious retail area that has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the shopping experience. “Almost all of our shelving is up, and we’re waiting on some additional pieces from our old store,” Josh explained. The layout has been optimized to eliminate previous challenges, such as the separation of levels that made navigation difficult for elderly customers.

One notable improvement is the elimination of the previous store’s separation of levels, which often made shopping difficult for elderly customers and those with mobility challenges. The new space will also allow for the introduction of shopping carts, a luxury that was previously unavailable due to space constraints. “We’ve left huge open aisleways because we know that other stores can feel claustrophobic,” Josh said, emphasizing the importance of a comfortable shopping environment.

Expanded Product Offerings

Pittsboro Feed is known for its diverse range of products, including feed for livestock, pet supplies, and gardening materials. The new store will allow for an expanded selection of bird feed and other popular items. “We know our customers love wild birds, and we’re excited to offer them more options,” Josh noted.

Additionally, the layout is designed to keep related products near each other, making it easier for customers to find what they need. For instance, garden seeds and fertilizers will be located side by side, streamlining the shopping process.

Enhanced Delivery Services

One of the standout features of Pittsboro Feed is its delivery service, which has seen great success. “We do about 350 deliveries per week,” Josh shared. The service operates on a tiered system based on zip codes, allowing deliveries to be made as far as 63 miles away, starting at a modest fee of $4 with no minimum order requirement.

Customers can easily place orders online via the Pittsboro Feed website. “If you want something delivered, you just go on pittsborofeed.com, set up an account, and we’ll find you on our scheduled route day,” Josh said. This convenience is particularly appealing to busy families and individuals who may not have time to shop in person.

Personalized Customer Experience

Pittsboro Feed prides itself on providing personalized service, a commitment that will continue in the new location. “Seeing the customer make the perfect purchase and seeing them happy with their animals puts the biggest smile on my face,” Josh reflected. The staff is dedicated to offering tailored recommendations for various needs, whether it’s for horses, chickens, or other farm animals.

To enhance customer interactions, the store has a weekly text reminder system, notifying customers when it’s time to reorder supplies. “We know that people have busy lives, and we want to make it easy for them,” Josh stated. The reminders will be customized to each customer’s purchasing patterns, ensuring a personal touch.

Community Engagement and Educational Opportunities

In addition to retail and delivery services, the new Pittsboro Feed location will feature a conference room designed for community engagement. “We hope to host meetings and educational classes about horse feeds, 4H meetings, and FFA meetings,” Josh said. This initiative aims to foster a sense of community and provide valuable resources to local residents.

The layout of the new store has been carefully planned, taking into account feedback from customers and insights from industry professionals. “We used a service offered by one of our manufacturers to help us lay out the shelves, but we also relied on our knowledge of what our customers want,” Josh explained.

A Commitment to Convenience

Pittsboro Feed is dedicated to making shopping as convenient as possible. “We want to make it easy for folks, especially parents with young children,” Josh mentioned. The store will offer an online pickup option, allowing customers to shop online and have their orders brought directly to their cars.

This level of convenience is part of the store’s broader mission to provide exceptional service and create lasting memories for customers. “We try to create those memories,” Josh said, recalling a heartwarming incident where he gifted a young boy a knife after he had waited in line with his dad for baby chicks. “It just makes people happy.”

The new Pittsboro Feed location is expected to open in September, although a specific date has yet to be announced. “We’ll have plenty of signs on our old building to let people know we’ve moved,” Josh said, encouraging the community to stay tuned for updates on social media.
