Bennett, NC – A reported theft from Bennett Farm Supply on May 4, 2026, led to the arrest of two people the following day after deputies located a vehicle hidden in a wooded area in southwestern Chatham County.
On May 5, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a tip that a suspect, identified as Jacob Phillips, was in the area of Chirpy Road. Deputies responded and located a blue truck concealed in the woods off Claude Phillips Road. The occupants were identified as Jacob Phillips, 32, and Morgan Shaw, 36; neither has a permanent address.
When deputies attempted to take the pair into custody, both resisted. They were ultimately secured without further incident.
Deputies searched the vehicle and found property reported stolen from Bennett Farm Supply, as well as a firearm reported stolen in Lee County. Deputies also located methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.
Phillips was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm and felony obtaining property by false pretenses. He also faces a warrant out of Lee County for felony larceny. Additional charges include misdemeanor carrying a concealed firearm, misdemeanor possession of stolen goods, misdemeanor larceny, and three counts of misdemeanor resisting a public officer. Phillips was also served with four outstanding orders for arrest and a criminal summons for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on May 11, 2026.
Shaw faces multiple felony charges, including purchase of a firearm in violation of a domestic violence protective order, possession of a stolen firearm, maintaining a vehicle for controlled substances, and possession of methamphetamine. Additional charges include misdemeanor carrying a concealed firearm, misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, two counts of misdemeanor resisting a public officer, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She was also served with six outstanding orders for arrest, including charges related to felony stalking, violation of a domestic violence protective order, and accessory after the fact out of Lee County. Shaw is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court on May 11, 2026.
